The “Shengrou Mien” (noodle/rice noodles/flat noodles served with sliced pork in clear pork broth) and “XiangDi Mee Fern” (fragrant fried rice noodles) are two dishes which may have started in Tawau, but their popularity has gone beyond this town. There are dishes, however that are best tasted in Tawau itself. These include seafood noodles/rice noodles/flat noodles (what is special is that the there are up to 10 types of ingredients), Soto noodles/rice noodles/flat noodles (Soto is the soup base, and with difference use of spices and ingredients, there are 8 or more variations of soto available), Fish head rice noodle soup, Cantonese style wet fried noodles, Hokien dry noodles, Cheow style Fish noodles, Cheow style friend noodles, laksa or curry laksa (soup base is quite thick and spicier), Bak-kut-teh (a pork rib dish cooked in broth) noodles/rice noodles/flat noodles.
